The Civil War was a hard time for many soldiers. Soldiers had to be brave and ferocious. Many families lost their favorite young men, and they were devastated. Soldiers said that the war was like being burned. Soldiers were lying on the ground without no arms, no legs, or even amputated limbs. Soldiers sat on the ground like bump on a big fat log. The dead bodies were everywhere: roads, battlefields, and lying next a friend or Brigadier. This was a very harsh time for the young United States of America. Lincoln would help the nation get through this dreadful time period. The soldiers had to face many challenges such as the lack of food, artillery, and harsh duties. Soldiers died more from diarrhea than being shot. Many soldiers gave their lives up for what they strongly believed in.
Lacking food in the Civil War was a tremendous problem. Sometimes the soldier’s own food would get stolen. If the soldier’s body did not receive enough nutrition he could get scurvy; his teeth would become black and then fall out. If the soldiers received bad food they would get sick and die of diseases such as salmonella. The food would become bad and be so the soldier could not eat. Food sometimes would get bug infested. The lack of food was a deadly thought in the Civil war.
Artillery was very essential in this war. Some of the Generals had pistols so they could pull it out on someone who came close.
Swords were probably not the best choice for artillery. Usually the best choice would be muskets or the long rifles. When a soldier ran out of ammo he had to find metal and mold it into a musket ball. Crawling through the brush was a very hard position to fire, and to make it even worse the musket could not sit right upon your shoulder. Also opposing forces were shooting when not necessary.
Artillery was a very consequential item in the Civil War.
Duties were a harsh task in the Civil War. Some soldiers had to always keep up with the canon. That one soldier would fire the canon when he was ever told. Generals were very important men. This man had to make serous decision such as when to shoot, when to change camp, and where to camp, guards had to stay and guard the camp when the militia left for four days tops. When the enemy approached, the main guard had to gather the other guards to defend their camp. Duties were momentous during the Civil War.
As one would see this war was jarring. Food was sparse and artillery was low. The duties were awfully hard, and many soldiers were fighting for what they thought was right for the country. Generals pushed their men terribly hard. When the men were told to attack the men would attack. Some people said at the battle of Shiloh it was snowing because of the peach blossoms being shot off of the trees. The lake down by the Shiloh Church was called the bloody lake because soldiers went there to wash their wounds, and many died there. The battle of Shiloh was also called Hornet’s nest because the bullets sounded like they were buzzing by the ear. The soldiers sometimes could not breath because the dirt was constantly being kicked up from other soldiers running through the battlegrounds. Also some soldiers were shot by friendly fire. Friendly fire means that means their own army accidentally shot them. Families were devastated after the word got out that their father had passed away in the war. The Civil War has the most casualties out of the American History. All of the battles added up would still not be as much casualties as the American Civil War. The Civil War was like a vast Tornado swooping over the colossal Southern cities. At this point in time the nation was divided in two; soldiers fought strong and hard, and many gave their own life.
