Guiding Question:___________________________________________

Think about your guiding question.   What do you already know about the topic?  What do you want to learn?

In the following box, write down what you know about your topic.:

Step1

Discuss with your team any problem that you would like to solve with your topic and write it in the box below.  If you decide to change directions at a later stage, it will be allowed but you will have to repeat the steps 1-5 that are listed below.   At this point, don’t be thinking about possible solutions until you follow the given steps.

Name the problem that needs to be solved:

__________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________

Step 2

List your hypotheses, ideas, or hunches that you have about the cause of the problem or ideas about how to solve the problem.  You will either support or refute ideas that need to be addressed.

Hypotheses, ideas, or hunches:

Step 3

You have already brainstormed what you know about your topic.  You may need to go back and review what you wrote.  As a team, list what is unknown.  Keeping your guiding question in mind, prepare a list of further questions that need to be answered to solve the problem.  Questions may be in the form of requests for more information.  These questions will guide your research.

List of questions or requests:

Step 4

Develop a problem statement that clearly identifies what your team is trying to solve, produce, respond to, test, or find out.  Keep in mind that the problem statement may have to be revised as new information is discovered about the situation.

Write a one or two sentence problem that needs to be solved:

__________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________

Step 5

As you conduct your research, only use valid sites that would support your guiding question.  Record the URL’s on the following lines:

URL______________________________________________________________

URL______________________________________________________________

URL______________________________________________________________

Divide responsibility for gathering, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting your research.  Exchange ideas; think about solutions, weigh alternatives; and consider the pros and cons of possible courses of action.  At this point, your team may formulate and test new hypotheses concerning the problem.  Some problems may not require a hypothesis. Propose a recommended solution or opinion based on your team’s research data.

Record your possible solutions:

Record a list of vocabulary words that you encountered that needed defining before you could proceed.  A minimum of 10 words is required.

Unknown Words Encountered:    Definitions:

   1. The Reader identifies the key issues that have been discussed. The Leader ensures that a clear list of what is known, what is unclear and what needs to be investigated in more detail is established. This is designed to help the group understand the issues surrounding the problem.

   2. The group agree on the established questions or requests that they will have to research before the next step.

   3. Individual Study - depending on which research route the group decides to go down, each member should either tackle all of the questions or specific questions designated to each individual.  A list of relevant Web links and key texts which you may use as a starting point to your research, although this is not meant to be an exhaustive or exclusive list.

   4. The group meets for several weeks as each question is considered and the group contributes the results of their research in a final essay and presentation.
