If you are a woman working fulltime, you will loose between 700,000 and 2,000,000 dollars over your work lifetime just because of your gender.  Even with similar education, women are being discriminated across the nation. This problem that needs to be solved is that men are paid, favored, and employed more than women unjustly, even though they are equally good workers. First of all, there are numerous statistics, information, and lots of background to understand before confronting this problem, and raising awareness and gaining knowledge is a great start. Also, things have changed tremendously since the Women’s Rights Movements, and it is imperative to recognize these changes. Over all of those though, comes the need for the US to take a law such as the Equal Pay Act (EPA) more seriously. This is a significant part of making women’s rights better. Making impartial and just liberty for all genders is what I plan to do by using this course of action. The women salary and employment problem must be solved no matter what, one step at a time.
Understanding the background, information, statistics, and history of past Women’s Rights Movements and present day struggles is essential. Lack of comprehension can lead to confusion when dealing with this problem. For example, if I didn’t know that employers can show discrimination by hiring and firing unfairly, by providing better training for one gender of choice, etc., then I wouldn’t know when an employer was being discriminating or when he was being unprejudiced. Additionally, an interesting statistic to know is that for the first quarter of this year, the average woman made about 655 dollars per week whereas about 80% of men made 844 dollars per week according to this study released on Equal Pay Day. That is about 34,060 dollars a year for women and about 43,888 dollars a year for men with a difference of nearly 10,000 dollars. Finally, the Women’s Rights Movements began on July 13, 1884 with a couple of women at tea planning out a public protest. This started a long chain of events that has made women’s rights gradually get better over the last 162 and a half years, but there are still injustices today. Understanding is therefore a key part in solving this problem.
Next, knowing how women’s rights have changed over the years comes into play.  One thing to know is what women couldn’t in the past in comparison to what they are able to do now.  Women used to be unable to vote, go to college, or gain any custody in the case of a divorce, but they can do those things now and usually do. Secondly, women used to get paid titanic quantities less than men. In the past, women were paid about one third, maybe a little less than half if they were lucky, of what men made for the exact same work; now, things aren’t perfect, but they’re improving.  Third of all, over the past few decades, women’s sports have been developed. Before those leagues were established, men were always thought of as the way more athletic gender, but women are now able to prove that they have an immense amount of talent. Like I said earlier, change has been Women’s rights have changed in countless ways over the last century, and it is very important to know how it has.
Most importantly though, is the serious and intentional use of laws like the Equal Pay Act.  The EPA was created in 1963. The US Constitution clearly states this through the EPA: No employer having employees subject to any provisions of this section shall discriminate, within any establishment in which such employees are employed, between employees on the basis of sex by paying wages to employees in such establishment at a rate less than the rate at which he pays wages to employees of the opposite sex in such establishment for equal work . . .”
In other words, this is saying that all gender should be paid equally for the same work.  Even though they passed this law earlier, the US government refuses to take Equal Pay Act seriously.  Women are clearly paid less than men today.  The gap is closing, but it is still unequal.  If the government would take the EPA seriously, things would be a lot fairer, and that is what I am striving for. The use of laws like the Equal Pay Act could change women’s rights dramatically.
In conclusion, a major problem that must be solved in the US is women employment and pay.  It is unjust that women are paid less than men for the same work and that in some cases women can’t even find work.  This problem can be solved in three simple steps.  First, we must gain knowledge about past and present problems that women face.  How can we solve a problem we know nothing about?  Second, we must recognize change and how things have gotten better.  If we do that, we can use the same strategies from the past to help us solve problems today. Lastly, but certainly not least, we must take laws that protect women’s rights more seriously.  When a cause is right nothing should stop us, and that is how I feel we should treat this matter.  Nothing should keep us from achieving equality, andthis is the way I feel it should be done.
