Bo Civil Rights Essay

“Limits can only go so far.” That’s what Robert M. Henen said; this means that that you can’t limit yourself to everything. Disabled people should expand their limits. One example for expanding your boundaries would be almost like standing up for your rights. Don’t let your rights be taken be taken away from you. A problem that disabled people have is not being heard out because they can’t stand up for their rights. This goes into civil rights because there are some people have been touched by a person with a disability. They go on to be the voice for the person with the disability.

I know a lot about Down’s syndrome because my cousin Stevie Bryant has it and my Aunt Elizabeth, who I am very proud of, has made a school named Jacob’s Ladder to help disabled children (like Stevie) learn. One of her techniquesis buying a calculator with coins so that special needs kids can learn how to add and subtract money. Whenever Stevie did something right he got goldfish (the snack) as his reward. This signaled him that him that he should do it again. Now Stevie is twenty-one and can read, write, and knows how to take care of himself. There was another person who helped the disabled; her name was Annie Sullavin. She helped Helen Keller. Who was both blind and deaf. How in the world was she going to be able to stand up for her rights? Annie Sullivin’s way of teaching was making Helen feel something then putting hand signals on her hand for every single thing. Helen Keller grew up to be very intelligent lady; unfortunately she still wasn’t able to stand up for her rights alone, unless Annie stud up for them with her.

There have been a lot of changes in the in the law over the years. A while back, a disabled person’s life was hard, but now their life is less difficult because the government has improved some laws. Some people with a disability couldn’t get a normal job. This happened because some nondisabled people are not the same as the disabled people and may look different, so they treat them differently. That was unfair because it was discriminating to the disabled. It was also unfair because the nondisabled didn’t give an example of equal rights. Fortunately, the ADA group has made a law that say that every person has to be treated equally.

One thing that my group and I are creating is a house that is disability friendly. This house will help with any particular disability. It will have a voice-activated phone for the blind. It will also have a workout machine for people who are paralyzed from the waist down. It will help by building muscles in the arm so that it will be easier and faster to get around. The phone will help by saying the location in the house so that the blind person could find it. These are only a few ideas but we have a lot more.

During this assignment I have learned many things. One thing that I have learned about my group is how they participate in the project. Another thing that I have discovered is that people were discriminating people with disabilities, until the ADA steps in and change the laws. When that stepped in they made disability laws and rights. During this project, I also found out a lot about civil rights. Civil right means treating everyone fairly even if they are different. Another thing that I have found is that discrimination is not civil rights at all.  This project was both educating and fun.
